History of this incident in Short
During the height of LTTE problem, in the year 2002, the Christian fishermen of Vidathal theevu were expelled and were forced to move to Mannar Island.
Those fishermen in the Pesalai, Pallimunai, and Thaalupaadu refused to accept their own community who were expelled from Vidathal theevu.
Muslims of Uppukulam accepted these Christian brothers and provided all facilities to pursue their fishing profession. The LTTE political chief in that area, Amuden participated in signing an agreement between the Muslims of the area and the refugee Christian brothers. According to this agreement the refugees have agreed to renew this agreement annually and to leave this area once the war situation is solved.
In 2009 after the victory over LTTE, the resettlement of refugees took place. Vidathal theevu Christians who settled in Uppukulam, partly went back to their original dwellings, yet did not dismantle the huts put up in Uppukulam, they maintained their presence at both the areas.
The Muslims who left Uppukulam due to the war situation, was also returning back after 22 years’ of suffering.
In 2011, all higher Authorities arranged a meeting between the two communities and informed the Christian brothers that they must return back to their original place of Vidathal theevu.
In 2012 January, another meeting was held and informed them that if they fail to move out of this place action will be taken against them.
Out of the 56 fishing societies 45 fishermen have met and decided that the Christian brothers of Vidathaal theevu must leave Uppukulam and settle down in their own areas.
Muslims of this area are looking forward to Justice regarding their genuine grievances. Muslims and Christian of this area have been living like members of one family and our understanding is that people acting on a political agenda are creating an unpleasant and an unwarranted rift between these two brotherly communities.
At this situation Muslims should not take the law into their hands for any reason whatsoever and not to take this matter as a political issue. But, to consider this effort as to get the justifiable rights of the victimized Muslims.
